For the anticipated release of issue 6 of the BRC Global Standard for Packaging in August 2019, our colleagues at DQS CFS have prepared an overview of the six major changes: two concerning the protocol and four key changes to the previous issue:
- Remove the second hygiene category (protocol)
- Remove second/split unannounced audit option (protocol)
- Corrective and preventive action: fundamental clause
- Emphasis on product quality
- Product safety and quality culture
- Pellet, flake and powder control in the plastic industry
After the estimated publication of the new BRC Packaging Standard – Issue 6 in August 2019, there is a transition period of six months. The use of Issue 6 is compulsory for all certification audits taking place from February 2020 onwards. Prior to that date, it is not possible to be certified according to the new version.

In other news…. BRC Food Standard Issue 8 superseded Issue 7 on 1 February 2019 already, following a transition phase of six months. Despite being an evolution from previous versions of the standard, the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 8 introduces quite a lot of significant changes compared to its predecessor Issue 7. According to BRC, the new issue has consolidated key themes including ensuring global applicability and benchmarking to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), encouraging the development of a food safety culture and expanding the requirements for environmental monitoring.
