Update: September 2021
In the Summer of 2021, IFS published the new version of the IFS PACsecure standard. So what’s new in IFS PACsecure version 2? In this article, we provide an overview of the main changes and the key dates for the transition.
The goal of the GFSI-recognized standard is to be able to verify and ensure the quality and safety of all types of primary and secondary packaging. It helps companies meet growing market demands for transparency and traceability, and helps improve product integrity and increase efficiency.
Following the meeting of an expert group in March 2019 and a public consultation in April 2019, the IFS PACsecure Standard working group had retired to analyze the data collected. With the lessons learned, test audits have been conducted since October 2020. The results of these test audits were incorporated into the subsequent final version of the IFS PACsecure Version 2 Standard.
Changes in version 2 include making unannounced audits mandatory. The use of the unannounced audit option is mandatory every three years. Sounds familiar? We should point out that this requirement is not really new, as it has been in existence since the publication of an IFS doctrine in 2020 and entered into force in 2021.
Furthermore, there is a greater focus on the site assessment and less on documentation. This results in a reduced number of requirements. Furthermore, the standard can be partially audited remotely. However, at least 50% of the total audit duration must still be audited on-site.
Audits under the second version of the IFS PACsecure standard will be possible starting January 3, 2022, and will become mandatory starting May 3, 2022. If the window for an unannounced IFS PACsecure audit begins on or after May 3, 2022, the audit will be conducted to version 2. In general, the applicability of version 1.1 ends on May 2, 2022, but there are exceptions where the application of IFS PACsecure version 1.1 is still possible. These are explained in the IFS PACsecure version 2 doctrine.
IFS PACSECURE SCORING BROCHURE
For audits according to the IFS PACsecure Version 2 standards, the scoring system of IFS Food Version 7 is adopted. The brochure “The IFS Scoring System – Driving Continuous Improvement” explains the system in detail and is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish here.
