From April 2019 onwards, companies that are certified to FAMI-QS can be audited to Version 6, the latest version of the scheme. The new version not only has an entirely new structure, but also contains some new requirements for certified sites. In order to help you prepare with the transition, we’ve summarized the key changes as well as the transition regulations for you here.
FAMI-QS is a leading quality and safety management system for specialty feed ingredients. This can be any intentionally added ingredient which is not normally consumed as feed itself, such as additives and premixes. Like before, the FAMI-QS certification scheme helps companies ensure that their products are safe, qualitative and in compliance with legal obligations.
What changes in FAMI-QS Version 6
With the publication of Version 6, FAMI-QS aligns its code more closely with other management systems: the code now follows the ISO High-Level Structure. This is the same structure as for all ISO management system standards published from 2015 onwards, such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 22000:2018 and ISO 45001:2018. For companies that have implemented multiple management systems standards, this harmonization will it easier to integrate the various standards.
Other changes are also in line with recent ISO revisions: the new version places more emphasis on risk-based thinking and on the process approach. This focus on processes has resulted in the development of the FAMI-QS Process Documents, which provide specific guidelines for managing the hazards associated with each process. These guidelines become part of the code.
A third significant change is the need to reflect on actions for preventing fraud and adulteration, as based on the specific risks in your site.
You can find more detail in the FAMI QS-Transition Document.
DQS and other approved certification bodies will be allowed to issue FAMI-QS certificates for Version 6 from April 1, 2019 onwards. Sites that are currently certified to Version 5.1 and who have a recertification audit before April 1, 2019, will be certified again to Version 5.1 and will transition during their first surveillance audit after April 1, 2019.
All sites must have completed the transition by October 1, 2020.
