DQS, CFS and ISO united in the Fight against Climate Change

Droughts, floods and record-breaking temperatures – it certainly looks like we are heading right into a climate catastrophe. Presumably, 2019 will be another record year in terms of CO2 emissions – the concentration will be at the highest point since 400.000 years ago. It’s news like these that confirm the urgent need for coordinated action, on the ground and in standardization work. Here’s some of what we are doing.

DQS CFS has been approved to verify Climate Bonds according to the Climate Bonds Standard.

The Climate Bonds Certification applies to bonds that are consistent with the 2 degrees Celsius warming limit of the Paris Agreement. As an approved verifier, we will be providing assurance to issuers and investors that bonds contribute to a low-carbon economy. The Climate Bonds Initiative places high demand not only on their own product but as well on their verifiers, which makes us particularly proud of this achievement by our subsidiary. More

Moving up to the standardization level, the CEO of DQS CFS, Dr. Sied Sadek, has been nominated as a member of the ISO Committee on environmental labelling. The committee is focused on standardization in the field of communication of environmental aspects of products and services. Such communication includes environmental labels and claims like e.g. carbon footprint declarations.

The standardization of terms and concepts is an important step towards sustainability, as it enhances comparability and prevents greenwashing. The clear definition of terms is also a basis for a healthy development in the area of Sustainable Finance. Both the German government as well as the European Union have declared that they intend to grow in this area. Without intelligent and effective environmental labelling, this development won’t be possible. We are pleased that Dr. Sadek will actively support this important cause as a member of the ISO Committee. More

This is also where International Standards ISO 14064-2 and ISO 14064-3 prove their value. ISO 14064-2 is used to quantify the amount of reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or removal enhancements, while ISO 14064-3 serves to verify reports developed using 14064-2 and other project-level GHG quantification. The standards are applicable to any project in any sector or region or organizational size/type and support the harmonization of GHG tracking and valuation, which will support consistency and comparability needed by stakeholders, especially investors.
