Sustainability - challenging climate goals for 2020
Climate change is the buzzword when talking about sustainability these days. That is why the search for ideas and methods for solving the CO2 issue is center stage. In order to achieve worldwide climate goals, such as the 30% reduction of CO2 emissions in Germany by 2020, it takes a variety of comprehensive measures. With the publication of EMAS and ISO 14001 in the 1990’s already, the world of norms and standards has made a significant contribution.
Not only do these standards contain concrete requirements for the improvement of an organization’s environmental performance; they also emphasize the promotion of environmental awareness among that organization’s employees. Read more about sustainability and how DQS is actively involved in several projects in today's newsletter.

DQS pre-audit in Malaysia
Sustainable biomass from palm oil
During a pilot project, DQS successfully performed the first pre-audits according to criteria established by the new European legislation for energy created from renewable resources at both a plantation and an oil mill for the processing of palm oil in Malaysia. The audits were also designed to provide information about adequate certification procedures for the new ordinances, which is why they were witnessed by representatives of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conversation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the GTZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer technische Zusammenarbeit).

Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP)
Measuring and analyzing greenhouse gas emissions: challenges for our future
The Carbon Footprint of any given product comprises all greenhouse gases that arise during that product’s entire life cycle and along the entire chain of value generation. In the context of the ongoing discussion on global warming and reduction of CO2 emissions, the term “Carbon Footprint” has become the popular benchmark term for measuring environmental impact. It allows for the identification and analysis of emission generators and potential for reduction. In line with the goal of becoming “CO2-neutral”, this potential may be found in increased energy efficiency, the use of renewable energy, or the compensation for unavoidable emissions using offset certificates. The new EFQM Model 2010
At the end of September 2009, the EFQM in Brussels published the long awaited revision of the EFQM Model, entitled “EFQM Model 2010”. The basic structure of the EFQM Model 2010 has not changed – the nine criteria (five „Enabler“ and four success criteria) have been retained. In addition to some necessary corrections regarding linguistic aspects and the consistency of criteria and starting points, some current issues have also been incorporated and the relevance of the scoring criteria updated.
Further information is available on the EFQM Website.

DQS combines ISO/TS 16949 accreditation
UL DQS Inc., based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois and the DQS GmbH (Frankfurt, Germany) have combined their accreditation for the leading automotive quality management standard ISO/TS 16949 under VDA QMC. This step simplifies procedures within DQS and also with respect to the customer. The certificate layout has been adapted accordingly and was newly introduced on March 1, 2010.
